Defense Techniques Academy is a firearms training company based in Arizona, but they also routinely instruct in Texas, New York, New Hampshire and Virginia. Carlos Roman is an instructor for Deftech, and he was kind enough to sit down with us for an interview last week.
Carlos is an active DHS Border Patrol agent, Border Patrol Firearms Instructor, and martial arts instructor. He has been involved in martial arts for more than 35 years, and holds a 5th degree blackbelt in American Kenpo.
We spent time discussing training philosophies, proving your mettle as a Corrections officer, his martial arts background, how he became an instructor, his favorite things about being an instructor, some myths about force on force training as well as my standard question for all instructors, what does he carry?
Carlos has a wealth of personal experience as a former Corrections officer and enjoys applying that experience to force on force training. There aren’t many jobs where you are routinely going hands on with bad guys and testing your skills and tactics.
In addition, Carlos is an accomplished marksman with a pistol and has a lot of experience training civilians and law enforcement alike.
We hope you enjoy this interview and would love your feedback. You can find a schedule of their upcoming classes HERE
